Robert Bloch, in his essay “Imagination and Modern Social Criticism” (1957), acknowledges “science fiction became the vehicle for social criticism” as a response to “main-stream writers [who produced] wonderful new stories in praise of the status quo” after World War II (102, 101). He continues,

No wonder so many adolescents are attracted to this form of fiction; here, in a transparent disguise, is the story of revolt against organized society. The hero—with whom the adolescent identifies—defies the rules and the taboos of the authorities.
